On babynames.com they have Mason listed as a gender neutral name. Do you think Mason is a girls name?

And they have the female sign listed first as if it is a predominately female name. Who in the world would name their daughter Mason? Do they not see the SON in the spelling? It is such an obviously male name with a very masculine sounding definition and spelling. I think they need to correct the website and list the name properly. It is very misleading to uneducated people.

On babynames.com they have Mason listed as a gender neutral name. Do you think Mason is a girls name?
people dont seem to care anymore, almost ALL boys names are gender nuetral now, its just sad, one name after another gets ripped apart by people calling their girls that and its no longer masculine or sometimes totally unappropriate for a boy anymore,

e.g.

i love Hayden but almost EVERYONE thinks of a girl now!

Peyton was meant for a boy (i know they are last names but when started to use as a first name it was intended for boys)

Talor was a boys name!

Riley

Elie (i know you proberly wont even think of a boy for that but trust me look on a bay name site it was originally meant for a boy)

Cody (becoming more popular for girls)

Rory (thanx Gilmore Girls!)

the list could go on and on
Reply:If you agree that Mason and other obviously male names should be listed as a boys name and not gender neutral. You can contact Jennifer Moss @ babynames.com and let her know and any other baby name websites know that you are tired of it as well. But beware the lady is a real *****. Report Abuse

Reply:It's obviously masculine to me! I know that the 'son' in Mason is a bit misleading, though. It's actually a name that's closer in style to Taylor, Carter, Chandler, etc. being an occupational surname. I know that it's the style in the South to give your maiden name as a given name for your first born, male or female. So it could be a rare feminine name. I don't like it that way at all, and people pulling names off a random website would probably find it misleading.

I hate boy names on girls, especially Addison and Madison. They're so masculine to me! I don't think babynames.com is a great place to search for names. They tend to play fast and loose with what can be considered a name, and the genders associated with it. They have Tennessee listed as a unisex name, and Espn! I strongly prefer http://www.behindthename.com They're more traditional and pander less to the tryndee namers out there.

ETA: Millie, I overall agree with you, but Allison has always been a feminine name. It's an old nickname for Alice, not a masculine name. http://www.behindthename.com/name/alison
Reply:I think people can name their children anything as long as it's respectful. It's like the name Madison or Allison, which is are girl's names.

Mason does sound more like a boy's name, though. If the girl wanted respect in her career, it would be ok. Women who are authors use their initials so that there won't be gender discrimination, such as J.K. Rowling. On the TV show Scrubs, there is a female doctor who's name is Elliot.

Mason is cute for either a boy or girl, though I don't think I would use it myself.
Reply:Mason was a family name. Way back in the old days, many people were known by what they did for a living. (Mason is like a bricklayer, stone worker). Over the yrs. it was originally a boy's name and then became very pop. for girls also. Now I do believe that it is gender neutral and if someone wants to use it for a girl, it's their choice. Personally I don't like it and wouldn't choose it for either sex. If Jennifer Moss is running the baby name site, then she should not be RUDE to anyone. There is a way of speaking, writing etc. to someone w/o being rude and still get a point across. Someone dealing w/public needs to learn this lesson first.
Reply:I do like unisex names, however I think Mason does sound a bit masculine for my taste. There are some names that really should be ONLY for boys. But I do agree with a previous answer that just because there is a "son" on the end of the name does not mean it has to be a boys name. Have you ever heard of a boy named Allison?
Reply:Madison has SON in it and it is a girls name same for Allison and Addison.

Personally i think mason is a boys name as well. and they aren't uneducated if they think Mason is ok for a girl. I know many girls with masculine sounding names, Bobby, Dusty, etc.

They aren't saying YOU have to name YOUR child it so why do you care?

Actually if you look Addison is listed as a unisex name not just a boys name. I go to that sight all the time and it's where i looked up the name a long time ago.
Reply:It's a surname. Certainly not a girls name. No, one person having used it for a girl (I'd guess Jennifer Moss or one of her friends) does not magically make it a girls name - it makes it yet another poor kid who will spend their life being put on lists for the wrong gender.

So yes, I agree, it's cruel. And about sums up my lack of respect for the baby name website brigade.
Reply:Mason is a masculine BOYS name. I agree it has SON on the end. Since when have girls been sons. Last time I checked girls were daughters and boys were sons!!!

Just like the names Addison, Madison, Emerson - they all end in SON and therefore are BOYS names.

That website needs to be corrected.

It's not fair on the poor little defenceless girls that are being giving boys names.

Nice one Millie. I completely agree with you =]
Reply:I think people will name their babies whatever they want (unfortunately sometimes) no matter whether it is a boy name, girl name, pet name, or random letters thrown together. I personally wouldn't name any baby Mason, but yes, it is more of a boy's name.
Reply:I agree with you! ANY name that ends with -son means "son of". That doesn't exactly fit a GIRL.

But there are a whole lot of names like that...Addison means Son of Adam...but everyone is naming there daughters Addison. Technically, Alison used to be a strictly male name..son of Albert (I think). I just think the -son names should stay male.
Reply:I dont think of Mason as a female name At All. I dont agree with where that site has lots of names...female/male. And Mason is not only a last name. It is my uncle's middle name and my son's middle name. I love it! But only for a boy!
Reply:It's a name which means people can use it however they like. Does Charlie or Andy sound like girls names? In my opinion they don't, but there are a lot of people who like them as feminine names. It's all about preference. There really is no right or wrong.
Reply:mason is actually a last name. there was a show on tv called perry mason. i think it's cruel to name a child something that can be mistaken for either a boy's name or a girl's.
Reply:I have never herd of Mason being a fist name only last. But I guess it could be a girls name. There are some boys names that are cute for girls for instance Rudi
Reply:I definitely do NOT think Mason is a girl's name- I completely agree with you.
Reply:I think it is gender neutral when I hear it I think of a boy but if my friend named her daughter that I wouldn't be like .....you did what
Reply:My dad's girlfriend's daughter named her little girl Mason. I think it could work both ways.
Reply:I think that you are very bored and need to find better ways to spend your time.
Reply:No, mason is not female.
Reply:I think Mason is a last name.
Reply:mason does not sound female

if you are having a girl DO NOT name her mason. School is rough on kids ;)
Reply:well, i guess it could be a girls name, but any name could be.

but does it sound right? haha, no.
Reply:i like mason for a girl

my friend just named her son that
Reply:its one's choice.
Reply:yea i agree. it sounds like a boy's name
Reply:that seems like an awesome name 4 a girl :)
Reply:no it sounds like a boys name to me
Reply:I'm educated (just to inform the uninformed) and I think Mason is a very pretty girls name. Who would name their girl Dakota?

I think depending on the way you spell a name determines the gender.

Maysin or Maysen are very cute for little girls.

God bless.
